The Nigerian Senate has stripped off the President, the power to assent constitutional amendment in the ongoing amendment of the 1999 constitution in the National Assembly.

The red chamber also approved a bill for immunity for law makers and Not Too Young to Run bill which intended to alter Section 65,106,131 and 177 of the 1999 constitution (as amended) to reduce the age requirement for President from 40-35,;Governor 40-35, Senate 40-35, House of Reps 30-25 and House of Assembly 30-25 years respectively. On the other hand, amendment for the devolution of powers to the component units, the Land Use Act and the 35% Affirmative Action, suffered a set back as they were rejected by the law makers.

This was the reason why in 1995 Beijing World Conference on Women, 35% of political and decision making positions were recommended for women.

In the same vein, the House of Representatives, approved independent candidacy, but rejected the indigenous bill seeking the appointment of an indigene of the Federal Capital Territory as a member of the executive council.
